Many members of the lab, including Maya, Maru, Vinitha and Nick, have been helping to put together Homeskies. The team’s qualification materials were reviewed and accepted by the league, clearing the way to participate in the 2024 competition. Homeskies will be UW’s first @Home team, and comes 16 years after UW last participated. See you in Bordeaux!

During this event which centered in accessibility, Maya organized a research workshop titled “Designing a Social Robot for Mental Health Support”.

In this workshop, the participants learned about basic interaction design methods such as brainstorming, bodystorming, storyboarding, paper prototyping, and Wizard-of-Oz prototyping. These methods were practiced in the design of a social robot for mental health support.

The participants identified a need in mental health related with journaling, and designed three different versions of a journaling robot using the aforementioned techniques and tools developed in the Human-Centered Robotics lab.

Professor Maya Cakmak and postdoctoral researcher Maru Cabrera will attend RoboCup 2024 in Sydney, Australia after winning the first ever RoboCup Visiting Fellows award. They will observe the Home and Logistics leagues, consult with experienced teams and league officials, and attend meetings with RoboCup Federation Trustees.

This winter the EMAR project team was awarded a NSF funded Quori robot. This shoulder height robot with a projected face and actuated torso and arms affords social interaction and expressions. We hope that the platfrom will contribute to our goals in researching and designing an emotional health managing robot!

Mattia Racca joins the lab as a research visitor for four months. He is a PhD student in the Intelligent Robotics group at Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland). His expected graduation date is April 2024. His research interests revolve around robots learning from humans, interactive learning and human-robot interaction.

Thanks to UW CSE Operation and Lile, we’re now in our new location: the Gates Center! For the research staff, it’s a period full of crate unpacking and cable juggling. For the robots, while the lucky ones got carried over to the new building, the unfortunate like Astro needed to walk themselves to their new home…
